How Long Is Onimusha Way of the Sword?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a focused, linear action game: about 20 hours for the main story, 25 hours with side content, ~33 hours for a completionist run, and 60–70 hours for the platinum. Producer Akihito Kadowaki deliberately aimed for the 20-hour sweet spot.
Time Estimates
| Play style | Time |
|---|---|
| Main story only | ~20 hours |
| Main story + some side content | ~25 hours |
| Completionist (all 273 collectibles, quests) | ~33 hours |
| Platinum / 100% trophies | 60–70 hours |
The 22-Chapter Campaign
The story spans 22 chapters from the Rendaino prologue to the finale. It is linear mission design with an open Kyoto hub between missions. Key beats: the prologue ends with Musashi’s death and the Oni Gauntlet; the Kiyomizu-dera chapter ends against Daidara; mid-game missions include Nijō Castle and the Gion/Yasaka Tower; the finale is The Clash at Rendaino.
Point of No Return
The final chapter (The Clash at Rendaino) is a one-way trip — finish your hub business before starting it. Note that after the credits you can choose Continue to return to just before the final mission, so nothing is permanently missable.
Why the Platinum Takes 60+ Hours
- Carnage difficulty exists only in New Game+ — a second full playthrough is mandatory.
- The hardest trophy, Glutton for Punishment, requires all 18 boss rematches on 3 difficulty tiers.
- The 273 collectibles include 23 Genma Notes only visible with Oni Vision, and 8 Kyoto Mysteries in the hub.
