How to use this guide: the campaign is 22 chapters long and mostly linear, with an open Kyoto hub between missions. Use the on-page menu to jump to your current chapter. Answers and codes are shown in highlighted blocks. If you are stuck, check the "Stuck?" sections — they cover the most-searched choke points.

Before You Start

At the start you choose between Story and Action difficulty, and between Defensive and Aggressive control layouts. Action is the intended experience. The game is a character-action title built around parrying and Issen counter-attacks — it is not a Soulslike, and posture/stamina breaking matters more than raw health damage.

Prologue — Rendaino

  1. Learn lock-on, movement, and one-handed/two-handed attacks in the tutorial fights.
  2. Duel Yoshioka Seijuro and finish him with a Break Issen.
  3. After the ambush on the bridge, Musashi is thrown to his death — a scripted, unwinnable defeat.
  4. In the red void, the Man in White forces the Oni Gauntlet onto Musashi’s arm.
  5. Soul tutorial: absorb Yellow (health), Blue (Oni power) and Red (enhancement) souls.
  6. With allies Takamura and Okuni, seal your first Rift (on PS5, squeeze the adaptive trigger fully).
  7. Unlock the Spirit Mirror, then enter Kiyomizu-dera: use Oni Vision and the Oni Bow to open the way.

The Stage Is Set at Kiyomizu

The chapter ends against the giant Genma Daidara. If you are stuck on the "How to Continue Onward" objective: shoot the glowing red points with the Oni Bow to open doors, and use Oni Vision to reveal what is hidden. See the Boss Guide for the Daidara fight.

The Kyoto Hub

Between missions you explore an eastern Kyoto hub. Talk to Okuni and Takamura, take on encounter tasks, hunt the 36 lion dogs, and spend Red souls. The hub also hides 8 Kyoto mysteries and 23 Genma notes (only visible with Oni Vision).

Side Quest — Careful What You Wish For

  1. Pick up the quest at the Yasui Konpiragu shrine.
  2. Recover the three stolen Stout Pillars (check the shrine grounds and nearby districts).
  3. Return them to trigger the Rasho-gan boss fight.
  4. Reward: the Oni Strength ability — required to break Malice Barriers (walls of red malice) that block optional areas.

Malice Barriers

Weapons cannot break Malice Barriers. You need Oni Strength, earned from "Careful What You Wish For" (roughly hour 5 of the story). Later in the skill tree, the Destruction Speed passive node speeds up barrier breaking.

Later Chapters & Known Choke Points

The Clash at Rendaino — Point of No Return

The final chapter is The Clash at Rendaino. Before starting it, finish everything you want to do in the hub: after the credits, choosing Continue from the main menu returns you to just before the final mission, so no collectible is permanently missable — but the final stretch itself is a one-way trip. The story ends against Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the final boss.
